Lent...

In the Roman Rite since 1970, Lent starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday Evening (before the Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper). This comprises a period of 44 days, the Lenten fast excludes Sundays which gives 40 days. The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer for Easter through prayer, doing penance, mortifying the flesh, repentance of sins, almsgiving, & self-denial. The last week of Lent is Holy Week, starting with Palm Sunday. Following the New Testament story, Jesus' crucifixion is commemorated on Good Friday, & at the beginning of the next week the joyful celebration of Easter Sunday recalls the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Lent, many Christians commit to fasting, as well as giving up certain luxuries in order to replicate the account of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ's journey into the desert for 40 days; this is known as one's Lenten sacrifice.

Church Reopen Initiative

Fr. Robert is progressing an initiative to reopen the church; the current intention is to accomplish this safely in 2 phases.

Phase 1 will be for Private Prayer - just like we did in November - and therefore no booking system will be in place but attendance will be recorded as we did before.. This will occur each Sunday from 10.30am to noon. It will start on Sunday 31st January and will continue throughout February.

Phase 2 will be a review of the situation and will take place the last week of February. The  review is likely (but not limited) to result in one of three outcomes:

  1. Closure again.
  2. Continue through March with Private Prayer and review again later in March.
  3. Restart Holy Mass the first Sunday in March

We are still in challenging times and you are not obligated in any way to attend at any of the prayer sessions or services if you do not feel comfortable. We all have our personal circumstances to consider. We owe it to everyone to protect not only ourself but others and as such if you feel at risk in any way then you must stay at home. We are all in different stages with the vaccine and we must adhere to government stipulations.
